Does Emirates Accept Cadets or Low-Hour Pilots?

If you're just starting out as a pilot or wondering if Emirates is the place to build your career from zero, here's the truth:

Emirates does not accept cadets or low-hour pilots through its regular recruitment programs. There are strict minimum requirements — both in terms of flight hours and type of aircraft — and these are enforced consistently across all applications.

Minimum Requirements for First Officer Applicants

To apply as a First Officer (non-type rated), you must meet all of the following:

• Minimum 2,000 hours total flying time on turboprop or jets with MTOW >20T
  (piston, rotary, and P3 time not accepted)

• Minimum 150 hours on type in the last 12 months

• Valid ICAO ATPL with unrestricted Class 1 Medical

• English Language Proficiency (ELP) level 4 or higher

Additional note:

For Airbus applicants: minimum 2,000 hrs on jets >50T MTOW
For Boeing applicants: minimum 2,000 hrs on jets >20T MTOW

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes — but only for UAE Nationals.

Emirates runs a National Cadet Pilot Programme through its Emirates Flight Training Academy. Here are the basic eligibility requirements:

High School Graduates (18–21 years old):

• UAE passport and Khulasat Al Qaid

• Final year of high school must include Math or Physics

• Minimum final score: 80%

• IELTS score: 6.0

• Minimum height: 160 cm

• Completed military service prior to joining

Diploma or Higher Education (21–26 years old):

• UAE passport and Khulasat Al Qaid

• GPA: 3.0 or above in science or engineering

• IELTS score: 6.0

• Military service completed

This program is exclusively for UAE Nationals — there is no cadet or ab initio pathway for foreign pilots.

Conclusion

If you’re not a UAE national and you don’t meet the 2,000+ hour minimums on multi-crew jet or turboprop aircraft, Emirates is currently out of reach. But that doesn’t mean forever.

Focus on building solid hours in commercial operations, avoid piston/rotary time, and plan ahead for your Emirates career.
